The A.S.S. was founded in Stuttgart in the roaring 1970s. This was the time when the town was crowded with lots of English and American people, forced to leave their natural habitat to seek employment abroad, desperate for friendly folks with the same longing for Tea, Fish´n Chips, McDonalds, etc; and the same mortal fear of Kehrwoche, Brezeln, Maultaschen, and Württemberger Wein.

Since then the A.S.S. provides a chance of meeting people from all over the world (including Germany) in an informal way. We have two regular meetings per month in various restaurants and several seasonal occasions, most notably a barbeque party and a "Weekend Away". Bowling sessions are also part of our program. Day trips to "Stuttgarter Events" are organized if enough people are interested.

Our main social event of the year is the Christmas party ... the (only) chance to wear a tie...

The A.S.S. is a very open club with a few regulars and many guests joining only for a year or for however long they stay in Stuttgart. So we would like to welcome anyone brave enough for an evening of english conversation to come to one of our meetings and find out whether you like us. We are always pleased to see new faces and eager to help anyone new in Stuttgart around the main traps.

Events and Meetings in 2010:

Dear Members, first things first: Have a happy New Year ! Then read the programme to see what we have in store for you! We will try some new places and also re-visit some of the older ones, apart from the all-time-favorites. As we always have difficulties with the location for the AGM we decided to combine it with the potluck this year. Let's see if it works out.

All meetings start at 6:30 pm, if not stated otherwise.

Wednesday, 13th January     Meeting at the Paulaner, Calwer Str. 45, S-Bahn Stadtmitte

We’ll be upstairs, in the non-smoking section.

Thursday, 28th January        Meeting at the Trollinger, Rotebühlstr. 50, S-Bahn Feuersee

Like the Paulaner, an all-time-favorite for many of us.

Saturday, 6th February          Potluck and General Meeting  (Members and invited guests only)

Christina and Günther kindly invite you to a potluck at our place (Begonienweg 1, just opposite from the S-Bahn stop S2+S3 Sommerrain). As usual with Potlucks, everyone should bring some food to be shared all around - the drinks and the company are free. We´ll start from 3 pm onwards. Please let us know if you come and what you bring.

For the General Meeting we would like all of you to come and address your opinions about the club, possible improvements, or other things you have on your mind. If you cannot come, please feel free to write us any proposals you have. The agenda together with the account is attached.

Wednesday, 10th February       Meeting at the Brauereigaststätte Sanwald, Silberburgstr. 157

The nearest S-Bahn stop is Feuersee. The place offers German/Swabian food.

Wednesday, 10th March       Meeting at the Nirvan, Eberhardstr. 73  -NEW-

Just a few minutes down from the S-Bahn Stop "Stadtmitte”. This is a Persian restaurant with a very interesting menu – something to tickle our palate !

Thursday, 25th March          Meeting at the Tauberquelle, Torstr. 19 NEW-

Just a few minutes down from the S-Bahn Stop "Stadtmitte”. This is a small Swabian place in a very good location.

Wednesday, 7th April            Meeting at the Aspendos, Neckarstr. 98

It is a Turkish restaurant which is very well liked.

The closest tram stop is Neckartor, U1, U2, U4, U9,U14.

Thursday, 22nd April             Meeting at Sophies Bräuhaus, Marienstr. 28, S-Bahn Stadtmitte

Wednesday, 9th June            Meeting at the Tauberquelle, Torstr. 19

Just a few minutes down from the S-Bahn Stop "Stadtmitte”. This is a small Swabian place in a very good location.

Sunday, 13th June                  Wine Walk Uhlbach

We’ll meet at the S-Bahn station Obertürkheim at 2:10 pm and take a bus to Uhlbach from there.

Thursday, 24th  June             Meeting at the Wichtel Hausbrauerei, Feuerbach, Stuttgarter Str. 23

Near the stop Feuerbach for the S-Bahn S4, S5, S6 or U6, U13, just a few minutes walk from the station. Parking is available. We’ll try to be outside, weather permitting.

Saturday, 3rd July                 Club BBQ                                                   Members & Guests only

We will have the traditional BBQ in our garden, Bad Cannstatt, Begonienweg 1. It is very conveniently situated, directly at the S-Bahn stop Sommerrain (S2,S3).  You’ll have to bring the meat, and salad, or a dessert; the drinks are paid for out of club funds. We’ll start at 3:00 pm, come rain or shine. If you arrive earlier you will have to help with the preparations.

Wednesday, 14th July Beer Garden Mittlerer Schlossgarten

We will meet in this big beer garden, very close to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) for a relaxed evening together. If it rains we’ll meet at the “Block House” Steak Restaurant in front of the Hauptbahnhof (Arnulf Klett Platz).

Sunday, 25th July Wine Walk Untertürkheim

The club meets at the S-Bahn station Untertürkheim at 2:05 pm. No need to say more – this last wine walk of the season is well known by now ! (Guenther will not be there but have fun anyway!)

Thursday, 29th July Trollinger, Rotebühlstr. 50, S-Bahn Feuersee

We will meet in the Trollinger’s beer garden again. There is a table reserved for us.

Weekend Away: 6th to 8th of August in Blumberg Members & Guests only

We'll go to Blumberg at the southern edge of the Schwarzwald. This place is very convenient for the famous “Sauschwänzlesbahn” and for the even more famous Wutachschlucht (the swabian Grand Canyon). There are beautiful walk opportunities available and we will decide, depending on the weather, which one we will take. Most likely it will be a walk along the “Eisenbahnlehrpfad” with a train ride back. Our hotel is in Blumberg-Zollhaus, easy to reach and close to the steam train station. On Sunday we may either take another long walk or visit the Landesgartenschau in Villingen-Schwenningen. The hotel will cost about 63 EURO/night/double room. As the area is heavily booked in the summer time I only got 5 rooms – which should be sufficient, based on the experience of the last years.

So HURRY UP, if you want to come!

Wednesday, 11th August Beer Garden Mittlerer Schlossgarten

If it rains or if the beer garden is closed we’ll meet at the “Block House” Steak Restaurant in front of the Hauptbahnhof.

Thursday, 26st August Neckar Beer Garden, Bad Cannstatt

We’ll go to this beer garden with a look over the river Neckar again. Closest tram stop is U13,U14 (Rosensteinbrücke) or U1,U2 (Wilhelmsplatz), Parking in Parkhaus Mühlgrün. There is a roof, so we can meet even if there is a little rain.

Wednesday, 8th September Meeting at the Wichtel Hausbrauerei, Feuerbach, Stuttgarter Str. 23

It is the S-Bahn S4, S5, S6, or U6, U13 Stop Feuerbach, just a few minutes walk from the station. Parking is available. We’ll try to be outside, weather permitting.

Thursday, 23rd September Meeting at Sophies Bräuhaus, Marienstr. 28, S-Bahn Stadtmitte

Back by (my) demand! Spare Ribs and home-brewed beer again. I can hardly wait!
